Chickenpox alert in Kollam: 97 infected, vaccination urged

Kollam, Oct 21: Health authorities in Kollam district have sounded an alert after 97 people tested positive for chickenpox as of October 17. While the disease is usually more common in summer, officials said fluctuating weather during the rainy season is contributing to the current rise.

Chickenpox, caused by the varicella-zoster virus, is highly contagious and spreads through respiratory droplets or direct contact with infected persons. Though it typically causes a mild rash with fever in children, the infection can spread rapidly in densely populated areas. People with weakened immunity, pregnant women, infants, adolescents, adults, and the elderly are at higher risk of severe complications. The virus can also remain dormant and later reactivate as shingles.

“In Kollam town, many residential areas are closely packed. Earlier, cases were isolated, but now clusters are emerging. The risk of severe infection is high for vulnerable groups, and timely medical care is crucial,” said a district health official.

District authorities have started vaccination drives and awareness campaigns to curb the outbreak. Vaccination is highly effective for both children and adults, though not part of the universal immunisation programme. “Parents should ensure children are vaccinated, especially those moving to hostels or outside Kerala for studies,” added a source from the DMO.

Health officials have urged residents to take preventive measures and seek prompt medical care to prevent further spread.
