Communal row erupts at Shaniwar Wada over Namaz, ‘Purification’ ceremony

Daijiworld Media Network - Pune

Pune, Oct 21: A political controversy erupted in Pune after a group of Hindu organisations led by BJP MP Medha Kulkarni held a “purification ceremony” at Shaniwar Wada, following a viral video showing Muslim women offering Namaz at the historic fort.

A clip showed the leaders cleaning the spot with gaumutra (cow urine) and performing Shiv Vandana. Kulkarni described the incident as a “matter of concern and outrage for every Punekar” and urged strict action, saying, “Shaniwar Wada is not the place to offer Namaz… we tried to hoist a saffron flag but officials stopped us.”

Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane also condemned Namaz at the fort, stressing that Hindu sentiments must also be respected in religious spaces.

Opposition leaders criticised Kulkarni’s actions. NCP spokesperson Rupali Patil Thombre called for police action, accusing her of trying to “incite communal tension.” AIMIM spokesperson Waris Pathan said, “They are spreading hatred… ASI-protected monuments are for everyone. Article 25 provides the Right to Freedom of Religion.”

Police said a case has been filed against the unidentified women who offered Namaz based on a complaint by an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officer. Security at the fort has been increased. “We will act as per ASI complaints and maintain strict security,” the police said.
