Udupi, Nov 17: Dr Vasudeva Bhat K M, professor and head of the Department of Paediatric Oncology, Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal has been awarded the esteemed fellowship in Paediatric Neuro-Oncology by the globally renowned St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, USA.
The certificate was formally presented by Dr Ibrahim Qaddoumi, programme director of the fellowship, who leads the Paediatric Neuro-Oncology services at St Jude. The achievement marks a significant milestone, as this is the first fellowship of its kind to be conferred in India in the field of paediatric neuro-oncology.
The rigorous two-year programme, which commenced in October 2023, focused primarily on paediatric brain tumours. It included two intensive four-week clinical rotations at St. Jude, while the remaining components—tumor boards, journal clubs, and didactic lectures—were conducted online.
Selection for the fellowship was highly competitive, with over 80 applicants from around the world. Dr Bhat’s selection was based on merit and his prior contributions to the field of neuro-oncology.
Dr Bhat was among six fellows worldwide to complete the programme this year, alongside participants from China, Costa Rica, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Romania. His accomplishment is expected to significantly contribute to the advancement of paediatric neuro-oncology services in India.da
