Mumbai airport hit by 146 cancellations as Indigo disruptions deepen

Mumbai, Dec 7: Flight disruptions across IndiGo’s network continued to ripple through the country on Saturday, with Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) reporting 146 cancellations by 8 pm. These included 70 arrivals and 76 departures. IndiGo, which operates nearly 400 flights daily from the airport, cancelled nearly 37% of its operations for the day.

CSMIA, one of India’s busiest airports, came under significant pressure as long queues and extended waiting hours inconvenienced thousands of passengers. To minimise hardship, airport authorities deployed a dedicated task force to retrieve checked-in baggage—a major logistical challenge amid hundreds of cancellations.

The airport rolled out a series of measures to support stranded passengers, ensure comfort, and manage the surge within the terminals.

Passenger comfort measures

Additional chairs were placed across both terminals to address seating shortages. Complimentary refreshments were provided, and more duty terminal managers and customer service executives were deployed to ease movement and assist travellers. Food outlets were instructed to maintain ample stock and follow fair pricing.

Passenger assistance and information

Special terminal gates were activated to speed up the exit of affected passengers, supported by airport teams, airline staff and CISF personnel. A 24/7 help desk offered real-time guidance, while flight information displays were regularly updated. Round-the-clock medical support also remained available.

Cleanliness and sanitation

Extra housekeeping staff were deployed to maintain hygiene across the terminal, with focused cleaning in female toilets and baby care areas due to increased footfall.

Baggage and airside management

A multi-agency task force—comprising Terminal Operations, Baggage Operations, MIAL Security, CISF and IndiGo staff—was formed to retrieve and process bags from cancelled flights promptly.

Despite limited space, the airport arranged special parking for around 25 grounded IndiGo aircraft. Landside operations were reinforced with additional traffic marshals to streamline passenger movement at parking zones and terminal exits.

CSMIA has advised passengers to check flight status before heading to the airport. Real-time updates are available through the Adani OneApp and the airport’s website, helping travellers plan better amid the ongoing uncertainty.
