Mangalore, Feb 20: Dr G G Laxman Prabhu, Consulting Urologist on Sunday February 19 delivered a talk on 'Understanding Urological Problems', organized by Rachana, Catholic Chamber of Commerce and Industry at La Oasis Roof Garden of Pio Mall.
For the health conscious and all those who wanted to know more about everything to do with urology, it was a perfect Sunday evening to listen to Dr Laxman Prabhu. He is well read on a variety of topics and is endowed with the gift of the gab and naturally his talks are an irresistible combination of knowledge and wit that makes the listener feel like wanting more. His wide repertoire of knowledge laced with his real life experiences which he quoted often made this talk quite fascinating.
Dr Laxman Prabhu pointed out that Urology is the only branch of medicine which finds a mention in the original Greek version of Hippocratic Oath, which means the practice of medical and surgical measures in the management of urological ailments were prevalent even in ancient India.
His talk was built fundamentally on the 4 fears that torment human being which is one of the aspects that separates man from animals. That fear of death, bereavement, injury and honour are the ones that puts mankind into most of the problems we face today, was the essence of his talk. Naturally he also dealt with the ways and means of overcoming the problem, which he said is possible by ‘practicing dying’.
"Since death comes uninvited, is not negotiable and is certain, the best way to overcome is to practice dying. Live every moment as though it is the last. Make that moment by smiling, learning and serving so that fear of death can be overcome”, he said. He further added that our ancestors had lived for longer period because they did not have these fears which has become a part of the lives of the present generation .
Dr Laxman Prabhu made a clear distinction between disease and illness saying while disease is common it is the illness which is deleterious to the health of a person. “Disease is easy to manage but illness is a baggage that is difficult to deal with. While disease affects only the person affected illness will have its repercussions on the entire family”, he opined.
Talking on Urology, Dr Laxman Prabhu pointed out that kidneys are gentleman organs which make no noise whether they are functioning or ailing. But he cautioned, "You can have serious problems of kidneys without actually knowing it. The numbers which you get in the report may not give you the complete picture or the severity of the disease." He also warned about the harm that might by caused as a result of depending on internet information excessively.
While he pointed out that degeneration is part of the ageing process it can be controlled by taking good care of the human body and by doing little bit of patch work as and when necessary. He advised people to seek an option and not an answer when they go to specialists with their health problems. Prostate problems occur only to 10 per cent of the males out of which only a small percentage may require surgical intervention, he said.
“Fears”, he said, “have to be understood and cannot be controlled. The message is loud and clear that let fear guide us. Human body continues to degenerate and it cannot be prevented mainly because our body has no ability to regenerate our tissues or what is lost due to age.
Finally quoting TMA Pai, he said the best mantra he gave for good living is a) not to be in a hurry b) no curry (Limit spicy food) c) don’t worry and be merry.
During his talk that spanned more than an hour he also explained what is enlarged prostate and the problems caused by it and how to overcome it. The talk was quite informal and Dr Laxman Prabhu succeeded in driving home the fact that we need to overcome our fears if we are to live a long and healthy life.
Earlier, President Marcel Monteiro welcomed the gathering. Captain John Prasad Menezes introduced the speaker to the audience. John Monteiro compered the programme. Raymond D Cunha proposed the vote of thanks.
The formal programme was followed by the game of housie and a sumptuous dinner.
