Mumbai, Dec 17: India Post is all set to inaugurate Mumbai’s first-ever Gen Z–themed post office at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay campus on December 18, marking a major step towards reimagining traditional postal services for the younger generation.

Designed to appeal to Gen Z users, the new-age post office will feature free Wi-Fi, a cafeteria-style seating area, a mini library, a dedicated music corner and curated philately merchandise for stamp enthusiasts. The facility aims to create a vibrant, youth-friendly space that blends postal services with a contemporary campus vibe.

Chief Postmaster General of Maharashtra and Goa, Amitabh Singh, said the initiative is part of India Post’s broader plan to modernise and remain relevant in changing times. “The Gen Z post office introduces a fresh and contemporary approach to postal services, specially curated for young citizens, students and digital natives,” Singh said.

“By reimagining the post office as a vibrant community hub, India Post aims to bridge heritage with innovation, ensuring postal services remain engaging and accessible to the next generation,” he added.

Singh noted that similar Gen Z post offices have already been launched at institutions such as IITs and IIMs in Delhi, and campuses across Kerala, Gujarat, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. “The Mumbai launch is an important milestone in expanding this initiative nationwide,” he said, adding that the concept is expected to change young people’s perception of post offices.

“With its cool, swanky and youth-centric look and feel, this post office reflects a significant shift in public service delivery,” Singh said. He added that the interiors, including murals and wall designs, were conceptualised by India Post’s in-house team in close coordination with IIT Bombay students, blending creativity, functionality and technology.

In addition to Wi-Fi, the Gen Z post office will offer a ‘Parcel Gyan’ desk to spread awareness about parcel and logistics services, digital and QR-based service delivery, Aadhaar enrolment facilities, and a guidance centre for Post Office Savings Bank (POSB) schemes. Customers will also be eligible for a 10 per cent discount on speed post services and a 5 per cent discount on bulk parcel bookings.

Meanwhile, IIT Bombay has also recently inaugurated a new 800-capacity dining hall at Hostel 4, now the institute’s largest dining facility. The project is part of Hostel 4’s reconstruction and was supported by a donation from Pramod Chaudhari, founder and chairman of Praj Industries Limited, and an alumnus who stayed in the hostel during his undergraduate years.

The dining hall has been named in Chaudhari’s honour. In a statement, IIT Bombay said the initiative reflects his contribution towards enriching the academic environment and student experience. “His generosity stands as an inspiring example of alumni leadership shaping the future of IIT Bombay,” the institute said.

Speaking at the inauguration, Chaudhari said his desire to give back to society was shaped by his time at IIT Bombay. “Among the experiences that most shaped my values, those in Hostel 4 remain closest to my heart. I still remember the meals, the warmth of the staff and the countless conversations with friends that bonded us forever,” he said.

He added that the dining hall symbolises community and camaraderie. “I hope it continues to be a home for laughter, learning and lifelong memories for generations to come,” Chaudhari said.
