Mausam Benazir Noor returns to Congress, ends stint with Trinamool

Kolkata, Jan 3: Mausam Benazir Noor, the Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member and former two-time Congress Lok Sabha MP from Maldaha (Uttar) in West Bengal, rejoined the Indian National Congress on Saturday.

Noor took the step at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi, in the presence of Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, West Bengal coordinator Golam Ahmed Mir, and State Congress President Suvankar Sarkar. Also present was Isha Khan Chowdhury, Congress MP from Maldaha (Dakshin) and Noor’s first cousin.

Daughter of veteran Congress legislator Rubi Noor and niece of former Union Railways Minister Abu Barkat Ataur Ghani Khan Chowdhury, Mausam Benazir Noor was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 2009 at the age of 29, making her the second youngest MP at the time. She was re-elected in 2014 from Maldaha (Uttar).

Prior to the 2019 elections, she joined the Trinamool Congress and contested from the same constituency but was defeated in 2024 by two-time BJP Rajya Sabha member Khagen Murmu. She was subsequently sent to the Rajya Sabha by the TMC.

Speaking to the media after her return, Noor confirmed she had submitted her resignation to Mamata Banerjee, Trinamool supremo and West Bengal CM, and will formally resign from the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

She said, “I joined Congress inspired by my uncle Ghani Khan Chowdhury and my mother Rubi Noor, who dedicated their lives to the people of West Bengal, especially Malda.”

Her cousin Isha Khan Chowdhury welcomed her back, stating, “It was the wish of the people of Malda that she would return to Congress, which she has fulfilled.”

The Trinamool Congress has not yet commented on Mausam Benazir Noor’s departure.
