Jorhat, Jan 4: At least 13 children fell ill after consuming washnuts, also known as soapberries, at Bor Soycotte Tea Estate in Titabar area of Assam’s Jorhat district, officials said on Sunday.

According to a senior official from the health department, the incident occurred on Saturday evening when the minors accidentally consumed the soapberries while playing in the tea garden premises. Their condition reportedly worsened later in the night, prompting parents to rush them to the estate’s garden hospital.

As their health condition deteriorated further, all the affected children were shifted to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) on Sunday morning for advanced treatment.

Hospital authorities confirmed that all 13 children are currently undergoing treatment and are under close medical observation. JMCH superintendent Dr Manab Gohain said that three children have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in critical condition, while the remaining 10 are out of danger.

Doctors said efforts are on to stabilise the condition of the critically ill children. Further details are awaited.
