Activist to challenge acquittal in High Court, alleges lapses in probe and lack of protection

Panaji, Jan 5: Activist Rama Kankonkar on Sunday said he would approach the Bombay High Court within the next two to three days to challenge the sessions court’s order acquitting Zenito Cardozo and six other accused in connection with an alleged assault on him in September 2025.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the verdict, Kankonkar said police had earlier described Cardozo as the key conspirator behind the attack. “Despite this, all the accused have been acquitted and the investigation did not progress in any meaningful manner,” he alleged.

Kankonkar criticised the state government for failing to safeguard him as a victim, saying it was the government’s responsibility to ensure protection and pursue the case diligently. “The state did nothing, and that leaves me with no option but to seek justice from the high court,” he said.

He further claimed that the government’s inaction has created fear among the public. Kankonkar also reiterated that he had named two politicians in connection with the attack, but alleged that this angle was never properly investigated.

“The probe into the political involvement I pointed out is completely missing,” he said, adding that he hopes the high court will take note of the shortcomings in the investigation while hearing his plea.
