Mangalore, Feb 25: The body of Vinay Ram (29) of Mitha Mogeru, Attavar here, was brought to Mangalore on Saturday February 25 from Malaysia, where he was found dead under mysterious circumstances earlier this week.

Vinay had been a resident of Mumbai and was woking as an oiler in with d'Amico Ships Ishima India Pvt Ltd. He had joined the company around eight months back. Prior to that, he had been in the shipping industry for three years.

According to sources, on February 20, he left for Malaysia from Mumbai on work, and the very next day, on February 21, he went missing. On February 22, his body was found in the water near the ship he was working on, with his work uniform intact. The circumstances that led to his death are yet unknown.

On the arrival of the body on Saturday, Vinay's family members, who were overcome by emotion, alleged that Vinay's death was not natural and that he had been murdered.

It is said that Vinay had planned to visit Mangalore on February 7, but due to some reasons, had postponed his visit to March 7 and had even booked his ticket.

Though postmortem has already been done, his family members demanded a second postmortem. Pandeshwar police, however, rejected their plea.

They then contacted police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, who gave his consent and directed the Bajpe police to send the body for postmortem.

Vinay was a bachelor. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are on.

As Paul, Udupi \ USA said his family members should file a case against the company and get the maximum compensation as possible. You see Emotions, feelings doesn’t count in business. Few days people remember the dead person and talk about him then later they will forget. Only his family members will remember him forever.
People be practical CBI cant even solve cases in India what they will do in Malaysia. It’s really bad news for Vinay’s family. His father wouldn’t have dreamt of seeing his son’s dead body. But its all fate. Death comes like thief. May god give strength to Vinays’ family to bear the pain. May his soul rest in peace.

    Dear Reader

Two gentlemen having experience in perticular industry given their advise. Instead of personaly attacking & critising them we should leave this up to Vinays family and friends weather to accept or reject this advise.

I am happy to get some kind of knowledge on future course of action to be taken in such incident. I was not aware ITF & MUI are unions helping seafarers. If we continue criticise such views, people stop giving advise. This is a great forum where people share views on some rare issue.

There are many Indians who have lost thier lives in UAE (including one of my close friend) with various reasons. Thier families got only condolences and sympathy.

I feel pity while meeting my friends family, they are in dire finacial need. None is there to help now. All they get is sympathy. If somebody advised and helped to file compensation claim with Indian emplyoer in Dubai, they would have little better off now.

I agree that people close to vinays family should initiate process of lodging complaint with proper institution for an enquiry and compensation.

Beliver me if we advise them to take help of our Police or CBI ... i dont know it is going to help.

You may worked for 30 years as Chief Engineer on oil tankers but you are talking cheap. Here on guy lost his life in a tragic accident and you are criticizing about his job. He may have been an ordinary crew member but he went and joined the ship in Malaysia to make a living for himself and his family. Everybody cannot be a Captain or engineer in the ship. So Walter Pereira, Mangalure have respect for every ones job.

It looks like Mr. Paul knows his business.I fully agree with him.
ITF - means International Travelers Federation.
Mr. Vinay's family should contact MUI ( Maritime Union of India), Goa street, Mumbai 39.
He is supposed to get insurance from P I Club. Let his family not waste time by asking for CBI inquiry etc. The percentage of conviction by CBI is only 2%.
As a working Chief Engineer for over 16 years on oil tankers including VLCC's, I request the family of Mr. Vinay to settle for the compensation.
A life is lost. It is a great regret. But alas! we must live on!

Well Said Chief. Sure , What would CBI do outside India. Anyway Seamen Are always faced with risk. The Seamen association shoudl place weightage around the family for pressurising compensation. Recall the Indian Radio Officer Killed by a US marine Missile inmAtlantic got 97lakhs in 1996. But All money is little as agianst the true loss of life for the family.

Article is little bit confusing for reader. Being working in marine industry (sailing and office) for 13Yrs in the capacity of chief engineer and Superintendent i would like to clarify few facts

    1. There no permanent employment for rating (oiler\motorman, wiper, fitter, Bosun, AB, OS)

    2. Normal contract period for crew is 7 - 9 months.

    3. If Vinay is joined d'amico 8 months back, did he completed his first contract term.

    4. If contract term is not completed by reason from company (if the ship is sold) then company is suppose to re-employ with in one month or give one months wages.

    5. As article states vinay boarded ship on 21st and went missing on 22nd i dont think there is foul play in murder angle, but need to check nationality of all crew. If all crew is Indian then this is unlikely. (At sea we never say you are mallu, gujju or marathi. Only friction is between Indian & Phillipino)

    6. But there is a strong possibility that cause of death may be accident due to negiigence or compromise of safety.

    7. There is no doubt a precious life lost. But Vinay is not first seman to loose his life onboard, I myself was saved from jaws of death and bought home on wheel chair. Also a crew memeber onboard my ship is died due to accident. CBI or any other enquiry will be futaile. A earning member of the family is no more.

    8. Only thing now should need to do is help his family by advising to get maximum compensation from Insurence company, coz Insurence compnay tries to pay nothing or minimum amount.

No father would like to bear this kind of pain by losing their children before his death. Our principle of life is that son must perform last rituals of his father. Here it is vice versa. Let us pray with God to give strength to this beloved father to bear the loss of his son. Let us pray with God to rest the soul of Vinay Ram in heaven forever

Vinay, MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN ETERNAL PEACE and give comfort to your loved ones and friends. It is a mystery that he went missing and that his body was found near the ship. I feel something strange and fishy in this incident. It was kind of City Police Commissioner to allow to do a second postmortem to be done. This might bring some light to the incident. I remember of a incident many many years back whereby one of my classmate who joined the Merchant Navy as an Officer vanished in thin air on the high seas. He was the only son and his body has never been found till now. I hope deceased Vinay Ram will get justice.

Any person know Vinay's family and ready my comments please advise his family as below.

    1. D'Amico is a ship owner, charteres and ship managers.
    2. Vinay's family has to file case for compensation as per ITF.
    3. Obatin a copy of his employment contract.
    4. Get as much as details of the incident, like when he boarded the ship, He has signed the article (most of the time when ship is in the port and captain is busy with port work, we waits till sail out to sign the article)
    5. Vinay's family must get compensation as per ITF rules.

This holy season, I pray for your family especially dear vinay. no father should have to outlive his son ever! The son should shoulder the coffin of the decesed father and not the other way round. Oh! how many sons shall we lose to treacherous people, who live by the sword. Oh! how many lives shall a mother see lost to the killer ocean. Oh! how many?!!! R.I.P dear VINAY! rest in peace. God bless your family
