Moonwalking’ traffic cop Ranjit Singh demoted

Indore, Jan 30: Ranjit Singh, the Indore traffic policeman who shot to nationwide fame for his unique ‘moonwalking’ style of directing traffic, has been demoted by the police department following a departmental inquiry that found him guilty of misconduct.

Singh, who was promoted to the rank of head constable in March 2021, has now been reverted to the post of constable after serious allegations were levelled against him by a woman from Mumbai. The complainant accused Singh of sending her obscene messages on social media and pressuring her to visit Indore.

Following the complaint, Singh was removed from field duty and attached to police lines pending the outcome of the inquiry. The investigation, conducted by the police headquarters, concluded that Singh was guilty of misconduct, leading to the cancellation of his promotion.

Confirming the action, Indore Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Prakash Parihar said that multiple complaints had been received against Singh and that disciplinary action was taken after he was found at fault. While the specific details of the misconduct were not made public, the orders stated that his current posting was cancelled based on the findings of the headquarters-level inquiry.

Ranjit Singh had earlier transformed routine traffic regulation into a form of performance, earning him the nickname ‘Dancing Cop’. His distinctive style brought him widespread attention, appearances on television shows, and invitations to manage traffic in at least seven other states. He also gained millions of followers on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.

Despite his popularity and the awards he received in the past, the police department stressed that all government employees are expected to maintain a high standard of conduct and dignity, regardless of public recognition.

Meanwhile, the Madhya Pradesh Home Department on Thursday transferred 14 IPS officers, reshuffling key field and headquarters positions. Sanjay Kumar, who was serving as Inspector General of Police of Balaghat Range, has been appointed as the new Police Commissioner of Bhopal. He replaces Harinarayanachari Mishra, who has been transferred to the police headquarters as Inspector General of the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB).
