Udupi: Forest Officials Raid Animal Shelter at Saligrama, Arrest Owner

Udupi: Forest Officials Raid Animal Shelter at Saligrama, Arrest Owner

Suvarna Brahmavar
Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (RD)

Udupi, Feb 28:
The officers of special forest mobile squad arrived from Bangalore and raided a private animal home near Narasimha temple, Saligrama, near Brahmavar here on Tuesday February 28.

The officers also arrested Sudhindra Aithal, the owner of the animal home and presented him before the court on charges of illegally sheltering wild animals and birds.

Sudhindra Aithal is an animal activist who shelters wild animals and birds that are wounded. The locals take wounded birds and wild animals in their neighbourhood to the animal home owned by Sudhindra Aithal.

However, as per the Wildlife Act, one is not allowed to shelter a few varieties of wild animals and birds, and even if the wounded animals are given treatment, they must be released into the wild or reserved forests after they recuperate. But Sudhindra Aithal continued to keep them under his care.

The department officers said that Sudhindra was expected to inform the department concerned once the wounded wild animals and birds were brought into his care, which he did not.

The home has peacocks, jackals, monkeys, owls, tortoises, boars and other wild animals sheltered by Sudhindra, which is a criminal offence under Wildlife Act.

Second raid by department officials

The department officials had raided the animal home owned by Sudhindra three years ago. Hundreds of wild animals and birds were seized and handed over to a sanctuary. A wild buffalo and a porcupine were allowed to remain, since the animals resisted anyone trying to come near them except Sudhindra. Since then, many other wild animals and birds were taken into the home.

Sudhindra Aithal has registered his animal home as an ordinary entity and has not obtained permission from department concerned, it is learned.

The officials stated that as per the court order, the wild animals and birds will be transported to sanctuaries in Mysore and Pilikula Nisargadhama at Mangalore.

Forest mobile squad ASP M K Murali led the raid along with Udupi range forest officer Prakash, Anantayya, Laxminarayan, Rajashekar, Ramakrishna, Manjunat, Jeevandas Shetty, Shankar, Ramesh, Manju and others.

Saligrama town panchayat president K Raju Poojary, Beloor Spoorthidhama proprietor Keshav Koteshwar, local Committee president Acchut Poojary, Nagaraj Ganiga, Maithri Shekar, Srinivas Amin, M S Sanjeev and others paid a visit to the animal home.

Our elected representatives should intervene in this case. Not only should they help get a license but also set up a not for profit fund that Mr. Aithal can use. I am sure public would certainly contribute to the fund. On a side note, I request the politicians to consider the political value from the huge support that Mr. Aithal enjoys. I hope CM specifically from DK region would understand Mr. Aithal and his humane intentions.

Infact the forest department should appreciate this person who is taking care of injured animals/birds. When our government can rear a terrorist like Ajmal Kasab and spend crores of money which belong to the Indian citizens on his security etc, then why can't his person rear injured animals/birds.

I used to regularly visit this persons animal mill, myself being an animal lover during my days as a planter. His intentions were really noble when he started off but down the line the greed for money has made him into nothing less than a poacher. I had regularly visited and monitored his activities about 6 to 7 years back and was shocked by what he was doing and by the rare species he had hidden to be sold. He of course showed them to me as I had gained his trust by regular visits. I wish all his supporters here and daijiworld readers had seen what I had seen happening there, I am sure you would have the harshest words for him.

Dear All, Instead of writing suggestion after suggestions and dissecting what could have been and should have been does someone have the ***ls to help Mr. Sudhindra register his Animal Shelter ?? If you cannot , then stop posting your stupid ass comments. You think Mr. Sudhindra is internet literate and he will read all your comments on what your minds filled with garbage suggest?? If you want to do something , call him, give him words of encouragement, instill the faith in him that what he is doing is right, so that another humane natured person does not stop doing good to these mute animals. Call RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal activists and arrange a solidarity rally for Mr. SUdhindra and help register his shelter. FOr that matter any Sangha or organization can help support this deed, not only RSS or so called Moral police. CAN YOU PEOPLE WHO WASTE THEIR TIME GIVING STUPID SUGGESTIONS AND PASSING JUDGEMENT DO THIS ACT??? IF NOT JUST SHUT THE ****k UP and SLEEP AS YOU ALWAYS DO.

Is our sanctuary better place than Sudhindra Aithal’s animal home? Will they arrest In-charge of Sanctuary for bad treatment meted to any bird or animal? Can they clean the water log turned in to odd colour at Mysore Zoo in Tiger Reserves? Instead of giving award to Sudhindra followed with stern warning for keeping them in animal home after their treatment, our forest officials arrested Sudhindra Aithal for noble cause. They never entered Jungle to arrest late “Veerappan” when he used stay continuously in Jungle Raj by disturbing wild animals for many years

From the outset it looks as a raid

and nothing else. PETA should take
a look in,in such matters. High flying organisations of the kind
exist but are only controlled by influential people in urban areas. If only those

Dear Daiji, Please mail this story and reader’s comments to our honorable CM for his kind consideration. He can do something to free Mr.Sudindra Aithal from the clutches of these forest officials and make Mr.Aithal conservator of wounded wild animals.
He can also guide him to be on par with requirements of law by granting an annual financial grant similar to the one he granted to Bufallow Race (Kambala) organisers.
Why did the officials wait for 3 years since the last raid to frame him again?
Are there no authorised forest officials in Udupi? What was the need for them to travel to Udupi all the way from Bangalore? Is it not a waste of Govt funds?

That poor guy is taking care of the injured animals with his own expense and they arrest him. It is a shame. There are so many wild animals killed in the forest and trees cut without permit at that time where are the forest officials. Unfortunately in our county every rule or law is made to allow the authority use it against honest people.

It is evidnent with the pictures that how with in his means Mr.Aithal is made home for all animals and birds.

If it is against the law then Mr. Aithal would have advised to handover them to sanctury or leave back to the forest instead of filing criminal case against him.

Government should give support to Mr. Aithal and allocate funds to feed and nurture these animals, which govt. cannot do. The forest officials have been making crores of money by exploiting wild life and trees. There is no one to question them. I appreciate the good work done by Sudhindra Aithal. I understand that there is the law of the land which prohibits individuals to possess wild animals. In this case he has been taking care of wounded/sick wild animals and retaining them. The people of the village seem to be a witness to this good gesture. So Mr Aithal must have given life to many a dying animal. Even if there is a rule don't the forest officials have a conscience? I remember what our Late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi once said: If any rule comes in the way of development or progress, then throw the rule away. We still have century old rules which require to be amended. In this particular case, I hope everyone will sympathise with Mr Aithal.
