Obama slams Trump move to scrap climate rule, says Americans will be ‘less safe’

Washington, Feb 13: Former US president Barack Obama on Thursday criticised Donald Trump’s decision to repeal a landmark scientific finding that forms the basis of key climate regulations, warning that the move would leave Americans “less safe, less healthy”.

The “endangerment finding”, issued during the Obama administration, concluded that greenhouse gases pose a threat to public health and welfare by contributing to climate change. The determination has served as the legal foundation for regulating carbon emissions under the Clean Air Act.

Reacting to the reported rollback, Obama said scrapping the finding would weaken the country’s ability to combat climate change.

“Without it, we’ll be less safe, less healthy and less able to fight climate change — all so the fossil fuel industry can make even more money,” the 44th president wrote on X.

The development has reignited debate in the United States over environmental policy and the federal government’s role in addressing climate change.
