Kundapur, Mar 3: Prawn is a coastal delicacy, an exotic item in seafood cuisine. It's a favourite among many, but sadly, those who get into the waters and take the trouble to catch the prawn, go unsung and unrecognized, their hard work fading into oblivion while their catch receives all the attention.

It is a sad fact that women engaged in the traditional occupation of catching prawns across the taluk are facing an uncertain future.

These women who are engaged in the activity when the waters in rivulets recede during summer are not recognized in the fisheries sector. A majority of them are Dalit women engaged in this task to earn their livelihood. It is significant that these women don’t use any nylon nets and gather the prawns by diving into the water.

These adventurous poor women carry out their occupation in a rivulet - Yedamavinahole to Varahi river across the taluk, as the summer season sets in and water levels in rivulets recede gradually.

"I have been engaged in this task for many years. I carry on since it sustains my living. The diving is dangerous at times. The state administration has to take note of our problems," says Kamala, a woman engaged in the activity.

"The women engaged in catching prawns lack state recognition and lead uncertain lives. State support is essential for their sustenance,” says Shekar Chatrabettu, a local.

A few women venture into rivulets as the water levels recede, holding an earthen pot in one hand and diving to gather prawns. It's a common scene in rivulets during the summer season. Sadly, they are a neglected lot.

Prawn is a wonderful seafood and a very expensive one. In US as far as I know it is a expensive food. You go to any Chinese,Indian,Mexican,American, Jamaican restaurant whether it is take out or eat in, prawn is very expensive dish. I visit India every year and go to market in Udupi and Yetti or prawn is the most expensive one. But they taste very good whether you make curry or sukkha. Long live PRAWN.

I have seen these women groping in the water many a times when I was travelling along the coastal areas of Karnataka and Goa, and have been wondering what they were doing with all that head gear and the paraphernalia, and thanks to the article by Aishwarya Beejady and the Daijiworld, now I know what it is all about. As the writer has put it, it is a hard and strenuous work, especially since these women have to be sub-merged in the water continuously for a long time, which is quite harmful to their health, and it is time that Fisheries Department take a special interest for their welfare, and wherever possible, alternative form of employment should be offered to them.

Saspoche is the right word it's usually carried out during the low tides. The prawns will be resting under the mire, we will have to fumble around and snap them tight with the mire. Now for the head gear I think it is used to take shelter from the Sun and branches with leaves in the pot are to keep the prawns from escaping.

In Kundapura kannada the releavant word for this method of catching fish and prawns is 'Balachuvudu'. I have seen this from my childhood. We also used to catch prawns by this method during school holidays.

This is the pity, we never modernize, never try to bring the life of these poor people to modern times. They say in China, they modernize and make any activity very profitable for the country and the people concerned. When will we give attention to this kind of modernization?

This is a special report about local fishing. Thanks for paying attention to this unique fishing. I have seen it in coastal Karnataka.

It is not diving and gathering prawns, rather groping for prawns with hands in knee deep water .In Mangalore, Tulu word for such fishing is "paraduni" and Konkani word is "sasponchem".
