Mangaluru, Mar 5: The Youth Red Cross Unit of St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, in association with Youth Red Cross, Mangalore University and the Department of Speech and Hearing, Father Muller Medical College, jointly organised World Hearing Day 2026 – check-up camp and awareness programme at the college on March 4.
The theme, 'Ear and Hearing Care', was aptly chosen to raise awareness about hearing health and to emphasise the importance of early detection and prevention of hearing loss.













Dr Gayathri N, nodal officer of Youth Red Cross, Mangalore University, welcomed the gathering and emphasised the significance of observing World Hearing Day to spread awareness on ear and hearing care, following which the programme was formally inaugurated with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp.
The inaugural address was delivered by Dr B Sachidanand Rai, president of KOA, consultant orthopaedic and joint replacement surgeon at Unity Hospital, and EC Member of IRCS DK. He highlighted the importance of regular hearing check-ups, safe listening practices, and the role of students in promoting health awareness in society.
Presiding over the programme, Sr Dr Roopa Rodrigues AC, vice-principal of St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, appreciated the collaborative efforts and urged students to prioritise preventive healthcare.
The resource person Prof Prashanthi Poovaiah, head of audiology, spoke on ear hygiene, causes of hearing loss, prevention, and early intervention.
A highlight of the programme was the model exhibition by students of the department of speech and hearing, Father Muller Medical College. They presented models and charts on ear structure, hearing mechanisms, common disorders, and preventive care, offering participants valuable visual and practical learning.
Prizes were distributed to the winners of the reel making competition in recognition of their creative efforts to promote hearing health awareness.
An ear check-up camp was also organised, offering professional screening and guidance to participants. Students from 13 colleges attended, and many benefited from expert consultation services.
The programme was compered by Serena, YRC secretary. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Nimitha, programme officer, Youth Red Cross, St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, resource person, organisers, and participants for their support.
