New Delhi/Mangalore, Mar 7: Not many regional directors are blessed enough to win an award on their debut, that too the prestigious National Award for the Best Film. But K P Suveeran, director of 'Byari', the first full-fledged movie to be released in the Beary language, did it.
The film, released in Mangalore on June 9, 2011, traces the plight of women in the Beary community in the coastal Karnataka region. The story revolves around the misuse of ‘Talaq’ or the law of divorce in Islam and its consequences on women.
The National Awards were announced on Wednesday March 7. 'Byari' shares the award for the best film with 'Deool', a Marathi movie by Umesh Kulkarni.
Speaking to the media after winning the award, Suveeran said that he had to put in a lot of research on the Beary community and society in general, as the community is immersed in a variety of practices and was immersed in it own system of belief.
"I am basically a theatre man. And you can find some traits of the theatre in the movie also. When I started working on this film, I had to face this challenge. A certain amount of give and take should be visible when one works in both the mediums," he said.
In the Ullal region in Dakshina Kannada, people belonging to other communities have also adopted Byari as their local language. Byari language, which has links with Malayalam, Urdu and Tulu, does not have a script.
The film, which was shown in some festivals, had won rave reviews. The star cast includes popular Malayalam actor Mummukoya, Rahim Ucchil, Mazeed, Prajesh, Sudarshan, Sharif Katipalla, Shamsuddin, Kabir Katipalla, Baby Shantha, Mallika, Ambika Mohan, Ashwathi, Roopa Varkady, Asha, Asfiya, KTS Padanna, Althaf Krishnapur, Batthisha Puttur, Annath and Baby Aizin. It was produced by Altaf Hussain under the banner of Thannir Films.
The movie was made on a budget of around Rs 70 lac, and shot in locations like Bajpe, Thokkottu, and some parts of Kerala.
