New Delhi, May 3: Family members of B Sashidharan, a naval sailor from Kerala who laid down his life during the 1971 India-Pakistan war, paid homage at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, a defence spokesperson said on Sunday.

Sashidharan’s wife Ponnamma P and son Sujith Kumar S visited the memorial to honour his sacrifice, years after his supreme act of bravery in the line of duty.

Describing the occasion as deeply moving, the spokesperson said it served as a poignant reminder of the courage and commitment displayed by the Indian Armed Forces.

A native of Kollam district, Sashidharan was among the sailors aboard INS Khukri, which was sunk in a torpedo attack by a Pakistani submarine on December 9, 1971, during the war.

Despite facing grave danger, he displayed exceptional courage and resilience while attempting to save the ship. “He continued his efforts with unwavering determination before laying down his life in the service of the nation. His sacrifice remains a testament to the indomitable bravery of India’s naval personnel,” the statement noted.

The family’s visit underscored the nation’s enduring gratitude towards its fallen heroes and their legacy of sacrifice. Armed forces personnel stationed in New Delhi were also present on the occasion to pay their respects.
