Washington, May 9: US President Donald Trump marked a pre-Mother’s Day event at the White House by paying tribute to bereaved mothers while outlining his administration’s positions on immigration, border security and family welfare initiatives.

Speaking at the Rose Garden gathering, Trump addressed “angel moms” and “Gold Star mothers,” describing them as “very special people” and acknowledging their personal losses. He said many families would soon be observing Mother’s Day with “love and gratitude and joy,” while also noting his own mother in his remarks.

The President connected the experiences of grieving mothers to his immigration policies, arguing that some families had suffered due to what he described as failures in previous border enforcement systems. He said his administration had strengthened border security and significantly reduced illegal crossings.

Trump claimed that the United States had seen a sharp decline in illegal entries and drug inflows, particularly fentanyl, attributing the reduction to stricter enforcement measures at the border and along maritime routes.

During the event, he personally recognised several mothers, including Mary Ann Mendoza, Tammy Nobles and Jacqueline Medina, acknowledging their losses and describing their experiences as deeply painful and unjust.

He also paid tribute to Gold Star families, referencing fallen service members and stating that the country’s strength and freedom were built on the sacrifices of military personnel.

Criticising the previous administration’s handling of the Abbey Gate attack in Afghanistan, Trump called it a case of “gross incompetence” and said it should have been prevented.

Alongside his remarks on national security, Trump highlighted several policy measures related to families, including tax cuts, expansion of the child tax credit, and financial support initiatives for newborns. He also spoke about efforts to reduce healthcare costs, particularly prescription drug prices, claiming significant reductions had been achieved under his policies.

He further mentioned initiatives aimed at making it easier for families to access fertility treatments by lowering costs and easing regulatory requirements around IVF.

Concluding his address, Trump described motherhood as “the most important job there is” and extended early Mother’s Day greetings, saying American mothers play a central role in shaping the nation’s future.

Mother’s Day in the United States is observed annually on the second Sunday of May and is traditionally marked by family celebrations and official tributes, including recognition of mothers who have lost children in military service or violent incidents.
