Thane court acquits two men in MCOCA robbery case over lack of evidence

Thane, May 11: A special court in Maharashtra’s Thane district has acquitted two men charged under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in a robbery case, observing that the prosecution failed to establish credible evidence connecting the accused to organised criminal activity.

Delivering the verdict on Friday, Special MCOCA Court judge V G Mohite stated that investigators were unable to produce substantial or corroborative material proving that the alleged offence was committed for financial gain as part of an organised crime syndicate.

The case was linked to a chain-snatching incident reported on September 11, 2022, in the Kalyan area of Thane district, where a woman’s gold chain was allegedly stolen.

During the trial, the court found that the prosecution had not sufficiently demonstrated the involvement of the accused within the framework required under MCOCA provisions. As a result, both men were acquitted of all charges in the case.
