Mangaluru/Udupi, May 12: Several parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts witnessed thunder, lightning and gusty winds accompanied by rain on Monday evening, causing damage to houses, crops and electricity infrastructure in many areas.
Cloudy weather prevailed across Dakshina Kannada district since early Monday morning, while rain was reported from various places later in the afternoon. Moderate rain accompanied by thunder was recorded in Sullia town during the evening, while light showers were reported in Puttur.

According to the meteorological department, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely at isolated places in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Tuesday as well. Mangaluru recorded a maximum temperature of 34.4 degrees Celsius, which was 0.5 degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature stood at 25.9 degrees Celsius, 0.8 degrees above normal.
Gusty rain causes damage in Kadaba
Heavy winds accompanied by rain lashed several villages in Kadaba taluk for nearly an hour on Monday evening, resulting in minor damages in different places.
Tree branches fell on electric lines in rural areas, disrupting power supply till late night. Coconut, arecanut and banana plantations in some areas also suffered damage due to strong winds.
At Kutrappady village, roof tiles of the Shri Panchamukhi Anjaneya shrine located within the premises of Kepa Shri Lakshmi Janardhana Temple were blown away by the wind.
Houses damaged in Moodbidri region
Several areas of Moodbidri witnessed heavy rain along with thunder and strong winds on Monday evening. In Mariyadi area of Marpady village, roofs of multiple houses were damaged in the rain fury.
The houses belonging to local residents Azeez and Ganesh suffered extensive roof damage, while cement sheets of Dinesh’s house were blown away. Roof tiles of Chandrashekar Acharya’s house were shattered, while the tiled and cement-sheet roofing of Amita Shetty’s house was also damaged.
In Biravu area of Hosabettu village, a tree fell on the house of Leela Raju, damaging the roof and a portion of the wall.
Widespread damage reported in Udupi district
Strong winds and rain that lashed several parts of Udupi district on Sunday caused widespread damage, particularly in Karkala and Hebri taluks.
According to estimates by the Revenue Department, horticulture crop loss worth Rs 3.10 lac and damage to houses worth nearly Rs 2 lac were reported in affected areas.
Several farmers in Mudradi of Hebri taluk and Bola region of Karkala taluk suffered losses to horticulture crops. Lightning strikes partially damaged houses belonging to Chandrashekar Acharya of Kalya and Dinesh Bin Kinnige of Kukkundoor.
Falling trees due to strong winds also caused partial damage to several houses in Kukkundoor, Nandalike, Mundoor, Belman and Bola regions of Karkala taluk.
Rainfall recorded during the last 24 hours included 8.4 mm in Karkala, 2.9 mm in Kaup, 1.7 mm in Brahmavar, 1.2 mm in Udupi and 1.0 mm in Hebri.
