Bangalore: Reckless, Drunken Driving Continues to Snatch Lives

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Mar 13: In a tragic accident, Nagaraj (22), a construction worker, who was sleeping on the footpath near a house under construction at HRBR Lay Out in Kalyana Nagar in the city where they worked, was killed by an SUV on Monday March 12.

The SUV was being driven by a girl who was accompanied by a male friend, and both of them were reportedly drunk.

Nagaraj (23) from Devadurg in Raichur district was sleeping on the footpath along with several of his colleagues, when the vehicle moved over him. He was rushed to Bowring Hospital with critical injuries, but died there in the wee hours on Monday. His companions, Rangappa, Shivayogi, and L Gowda, all from Raichur district, were injured, and admitted into a hospital for treatment.

Several construction workers like Nagaraj, who were sleeping by his side, suffered minor injuries, as the vehicle dragged them away at around 12.30 am. They said they were sleeping outside because of hot weather.

Surviving workers said they were jolted out of their sleep when the SUV, a Toyota Foruner, went wayward and dragged them together, before a young man and a woman in the vehicle got down and fled from the scene. They said that the woman was driving the vehicle at the time. They felt that both the occupants of the vehicle were heavily drunk.

Nagaraj, it is learnt, had shifted base to the city in search of better living conditions, a few months back. He had married, and his wife continues to live in far away Devadurg. As she had delivered his baby just four days back, Nagaraj was planning to visit that place within a couple of days to see his son for the first time.

The vehicle belongs to a person named Raghu Patel, the police said, adding that Patel claims he had lent his car to a man named Ravi. Both Ravi and his female companion in the car are missing, they added.

The city has seen such accidents even in the past. Although the policemen claim that they investigate such accidents with all seriousness, and have improved their record as far as nailing the culprits is concerned, innocent lives continue to be lost to drunken driving during late nights.

Nagaraj, may your soul rest in eternal peace and five comfort to your wife, your new born son and other family members and friends. It is a sad incident caused by a drunk female driver who fled the scene of accident with her male companion whom I presume was highly drunk. Raghu Patel will make up a story to avoid the two who were in the car being charged with the crime. This is what happens in India that if you have money you can escape with any crime. No charges will be filed and they will bring an innocent person to face the charges by paying some money.

The police should investigate the case and arrest the real culptit and should be put in jail without bail. The deceased poor construction worker and the injured should be compensated to the maximum and even the child who lost the father should get the highest compensation. Since the the person who committed the crime seems to be rich business men will try to avoid to pay the maximum amount. This is Maha Bharath.

First of all pray to Almighty to rest departed soul in eternal peace and heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family.Compensation to the family of deceased should be the priority besides awarding stringent punishment to culprits.
Stringent Law should be enacted in a such a way that drunken driving should not be allowed in the future days to come.
But in country like India where corruption is more prevalent,it will not be allowed to work due to bureaucratic attitude of the government.Drunken driver's who causes accident/death/damage to the private/public property due to his negligence driving, vehicle should be impounded, license should be ceased and not allowed to drive in the future.

These kind of incidents should never happen....death sentence should be the minimum punishment for these culprits. if one is aware that he/she will get punished for such bad deeds, definitely he/ she will be more alert/conscious.

May his soul rest in peace.

If the Law Enforcing Authorities are free from under the table gifts then make the Girl Driver and her Male partner to pay compensation to Nagaraj’s Wife and his four day old Child.

For sure every tear that comes out of the Childs eye shall be a curse to the Girl Driver.

Mumbai had the same problem a few years back but now this has been successfully resolved.
    1. All midnight police patrolling vehicles are equipped with breath analyzer test kits.
    2. Drunk drivers are immediately sent to jail (No fine).
    3. Names and photographs of drivers caught drunk are published in the morning new papers.
    4. Police are posted outside bars and hotels to discourage drunk drivers from taking the wheel.
    5. Hotels and bars offer services of temporary drivers who can you and your vehicle back home.
    6. If you are caught drinking and driving - your POLITICAL connections do not work.

Very sad incident indeed. How few reckless drivers under the influence of drugs and alchohal snuff out the lives of poor people who reside by roadside. May his soul rest in peace. Strict action needs to taken against the culprit irrespective of party, caste etc.

I was thinking that the police were wrong when they caught my brother for Driving Under Influence and fined him 2000 Rs, now I gather what they did was right. They should fine as per ones financial status in the society and increase the fine 10 times if it is the same offence a second time, or else people will take it lightly. Just because of one lady's pleasure a poor man's life is lost, which she will never be able to bring it back even by giving up her own life. Now all we have to think is it to be a accident and it was poor man's fate to die like that. May god give wisdom to these people who seek pleasure by drinking and driving. May God give strength and shower his blessings on the poor widow and the orphaned child. Now the drunken woman has to drink the tear's of this widow all through her life. May God Grant peace to the departed Soul.

i just want to say it is "rediculous". in our system we have everything to control this kind of crime, but all useless. after crime we can catch culprits but what is the use! the people like "nagaraj" wont come back.so i request to police dept. to catch culprits soon and be punished. and also request with govt dept that we should make some strict rules to the employer for providing good shelters to employees ,like having at foreign contries.

Very sad indeed, rash driving or drunk driving killing people a matter of grave concern where life of a man involves. Under such circumstances stringent action punishing the offender becomes necessary to stop such things in future.

In India, there is no importance of prevention.

More than investigating such cases, the Police should book the drunken drivers and the courts should award stringent punishment.

This will deter the people fron drunken driving.
