Sonipat shootout: Inspector survives bullet hit as police nab two history-sheeters

Sonipat, May 20: A dramatic late-night encounter between Sonipat Police’s Crime Unit-1 and two notorious criminals unfolded in the fields near Gaurad village, leaving one accused injured and another arrested.

According to police sources, heavy exchange of fire took place during the operation. Inspector Rajeev had a narrow escape after a bullet struck his bulletproof jacket while leading the team during the encounter.

One of the accused, identified as Raju alias Banda from Kidoli village, sustained a bullet injury in his leg during the gunfight. The second accused, Sanjay of Bahadurgarh, was apprehended from the spot and is currently being interrogated by police officials.

Police said both the accused are history-sheeters with over a dozen criminal cases registered against them, including murder, attempt to murder, robbery, dacoity and Arms Act offences.

During the operation, police recovered an illegal .32 bore pistol and an iron spike-like tool allegedly used for criminal activities from the possession of the accused.

The injured accused was shifted to Kharkhoda Civil Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment under tight police security.

Senior officers rushed to the encounter site soon after receiving information about the operation. The area was later sealed and searched as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police officials said further interrogation is underway to ascertain whether the accused were involved in other criminal activities across Haryana and neighbouring states.
