Telangana heatwave claims 22 lives as mercury crosses 46°C

Hyderabad, May 22: Telangana is battling a severe heatwave as soaring temperatures and dry winds swept across the state, triggering a major health crisis. At least 22 people reportedly died due to suspected heatstroke-related conditions in a single day on Thursday.

Several districts recorded temperatures above 46 degrees Celsius. Mutharam in Peddapalli district and Munagala in Suryapet district registered the highest temperature of 46.5°C, while Chunchupalli in Bhadradri Kothagudem and Kamalapur in Hanamkonda touched 46.4°C.

The combined Warangal region reported the highest number of deaths. Fatalities were also reported from Mahabubabad, Mulugu, Bhupalpally, Suryapet, Mancherial, Nalgonda, Yadadri Bhongir, Medak, Karimnagar, Ramagundam and Khammam districts.

Most of the victims were elderly persons, labourers and outdoor workers exposed to extreme heat for long hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Telangana for the next two days, warning that temperatures between 45°C and 47°C are likely to continue in several parts of the state.

Authorities have advised people to avoid stepping out between 11 am and 4 pm, drink plenty of water and seek immediate medical attention in case of heatstroke symptoms.

The Telangana government has directed hospitals and primary health centres to remain on alert to tackle heat-related emergencies.
