California, May 27: A Southern California man known in his neighbourhood for displaying patriotic and pro-Trump decorations outside his home has died after being assaulted near his residence, authorities said.

The victim, identified as 69-year-old Kerry Sheron, died on Sunday night following the attack that took place last Wednesday in Escondido, north of San Diego, according to the Escondido Police Department.

Police said 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler, also a resident of Escondido, was arrested in connection with the incident. He has been charged with attempted murder, elder abuse, criminal threats and battery, and is currently being held without bail.

According to reports, Butler appeared in court on Friday and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Authorities said additional charges may be considered following Sheron’s death, with the next court hearing scheduled for June 3.

Deputy District Attorney Ross Garcia reportedly told local media that the assault appeared to be unprovoked. Prosecutors alleged that Butler struck Sheron in the jaw, causing him to fall, before allegedly continuing to attack him in the head area.

Investigators said it remains unclear whether the two men knew each other prior to the incident.

Police described Sheron’s injuries as severe. A bystander who attempted to intervene during the assault also sustained injuries.

Sheron was rushed to hospital and remained in critical condition until he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

Family members described him as an Army veteran known in the community for decorating his house with American flags and signs supporting former US President Donald Trump.

Video footage aired by local media showed Sheron’s residence covered with patriotic displays and pro-Trump signs. Several supporters had reportedly gathered outside the home following the incident to express solidarity with the family.

Sheron’s wife stated that the couple had previously faced harassment and threats over their political displays but had never experienced physical violence before.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the decorations or political views were linked to the motive behind the assault. The official cause and manner of death are still pending examination by the medical examiner.
