Thiruvananthapuram, May 27: Concerns over the security of the famed Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple have intensified after reports surfaced regarding missing gold and diamond ornaments from the temple treasury.
According to a report submitted by the Director General of Police (DGP) to the Kerala Home Secretary, around 78 grams of gold ornaments along with a diamond-studded ornament known as the Vairam Nama are reportedly untraceable from the temple inventory.

The police report has raised serious questions regarding the existing security arrangements at the historic temple, which is globally known for its immense wealth and religious significance.
Temple records reportedly indicate that the Vairam Nama had been taken out for repair work several months ago but has not yet been returned. Similarly, a gold lamp that was sent for maintenance nearly six months ago also remains unaccounted for.
The incident has sparked concern among devotees and authorities alike, with increasing calls for stricter monitoring and accountability in handling the temple’s valuable artefacts and treasures.
In view of the developments, the DGP has recommended a series of measures to strengthen security at the temple premises. These include shifting all gold and silver items to secure vaults, storing devotees’ offerings in dedicated lockers and implementing strict security checks at every entry point.
The report also stressed the need for tighter surveillance systems and improved access control to prevent future lapses.
Located in Thiruvananthapuram, the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple is one of the most revered Vishnu temples in India and forms part of the 108 Divya Desams of the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
The temple has historically been associated with immense wealth and is frequently referred to in ancient Sangam literature. Historians believe the shrine earned the title of “Golden Temple” because of its vast treasures even during the early Sangam era.
