Kolkata, May 28: Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Santanu Sen on Thursday resigned from the post of the party’s national spokesperson, citing the controversy surrounding the RG Kar rape-murder case and corruption allegations.
Sen, a former Rajya Sabha member and councillor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), also wrote to party supremo Mamata Banerjee, stating that he was stepping down in deference to the people’s verdict in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections.
The doctor-turned-politician said he had always fought for the party and defended its stand despite disagreeing with it on several issues.
“But in the current situation, when the people of Bengal have rejected us for various immoral acts and corruption, including the RG Kar case, the Abhaya case and cash-for-jobs corruption, my mind no longer agrees to support them as a spokesperson in any way,” Sen said.

“Therefore, I want to resign from the post of All India Spokesperson of the Trinamool Congress, taking the verdict of the people into consideration. Please accept and honour my resignation,” he added.
The resignation comes amid growing rebellion and internal churn within the TMC following its defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections, where the party managed to win only 80 of the 294 seats in the state.
Several leaders have openly expressed dissent against the party leadership. Among them is Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who, like Sen, resigned from all party posts.
Dastidar, the Lok Sabha MP from Barasat constituency, had also attended a review meeting convened by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in Kalyani, further angering the TMC leadership.
On Thursday, she accused senior TMC leader and Serampore MP Kalyan Banerjee of verbally abusing her inside the Lok Sabha and demanded action against him.
While the TMC has not officially reacted to Dastidar’s allegations, Banerjee dismissed the accusations as “motivated”.
“As for the allegations being made, the question is who said what and when. The problem lies in their intentions,” Banerjee said.
