Surat man seeks euthanasia, alleges harassment by wife

Surat, May 30: A man from Surat in Gujarat has approached authorities seeking euthanasia, alleging that persistent harassment by his wife and the lack of action on his complaints have pushed him to desperation.

Kirit Patel submitted an application to the district collector, claiming that prolonged legal disputes and personal distress have left him with no option but to seek permission to end his life.

Patel alleged that his wife repeatedly misused laws intended to protect women by filing complaints against him following domestic disputes. According to him, she would allegedly provoke arguments and later approach the police or women's helplines, resulting in legal action against him. The allegations have not been independently verified.

One of Patel's most serious allegations concerns his son from a previous marriage. He claimed that his wife had attempted to harm the child and that despite approaching the police, no FIR was registered in connection with the complaint. He said he had repeatedly requested authorities to investigate the matter and take appropriate action.

Patel also highlighted the couple's marital history, stating that both he and his wife were in their third marriage. Describing her as a "looteri dulhan" (looter bride), he alleged that she used legal proceedings and financial demands to target husbands. He further claimed that she had extracted money from her previous spouses, although these allegations remain unverified.

According to Patel, the couple married on November 14, 2024. He alleged that his wife, mother-in-law and other relatives had repeatedly harassed him and pressured him for money. He also claimed that maintenance and domestic violence cases filed against him were being used to exert pressure.

In his euthanasia plea, Patel expressed frustration over what he described as the absence of adequate legal protection for men involved in matrimonial disputes. He stated that repeated visits to police stations and government offices had yielded only assurances without any concrete action.

The application, which reportedly bears a receipt stamp from the Surat Collector's Office, seeks permission for euthanasia, with Patel stating that he sees no other way out of his situation.

Patel has also warned that he may take an extreme step if his grievances are not addressed within a specified period.

Authorities have not yet issued an official response to either the allegations or the euthanasia request. The matter has triggered discussions on mental health, legal remedies available to men in matrimonial disputes and the handling of domestic conflict complaints. Officials are expected to examine the representations submitted by Patel and take further action in accordance with the law.
