Thiruvananthapuram, May 30: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday intensified its investigation into a major explosives seizure by conducting coordinated searches at several locations in Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Kasaragod districts of Kerala.
The operation is linked to the interception of a truck carrying a substantial quantity of explosive materials at Chemmad in Tirurangadi, Malappuram district, on February 7. Authorities had reportedly discovered the explosives hidden among onion sacks being transported to a hollow-brick manufacturing unit.

As part of the latest action, NIA teams searched a hollow-brick storage facility in Tirurangadi and a residence in Wandoor. Investigators are examining whether the explosives were acquired, stored, and transported in compliance with legal regulations, while also probing possible violations related to their movement and handling.
Initial claims suggested that the materials were intended for quarrying activities. However, the manner in which the explosives were transported raised suspicions, prompting a detailed investigation that was later taken over by the NIA.
The agency also carried out searches in Kadumeni under the Chittarikkal police station limits in Kasaragod district. Raids were conducted at the residence and quarry premises of an individual who had previously operated a granite quarry in the region.
Officials are exploring potential links between the seized explosives and quarry-related operations in northern Kerala.
During the searches, investigators are expected to scrutinise documents, digital records, and electronic devices to trace the origin, transportation route, intended recipients, and possible end-use of the explosive materials.
Searches were also conducted at locations in Kozhikode district, although authorities have not yet disclosed specific details regarding those operations.
The multi-district raids indicate that the investigation has widened significantly beyond the initial seizure, with the agency now focusing on uncovering a broader network involved in the sourcing, transport, and utilisation of explosives.
The NIA has not issued an official statement on the outcome of the searches so far. More information is expected once the examination of seized materials and evidence is completed.
