Puttur, Jun 2: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and lightning caused widespread damage in parts of Hirebandadi, Bajathuru and Uppinangady villages on Monday evening.

The sudden spell of inclement weather uprooted several trees, damaged arecanut plantations and brought down electricity poles, disrupting normal life in the affected areas. A house belonging to Jagadish, a resident of Kodange in Uppinangady village, suffered damage after the sheet roof was blown away by the strong winds.

According to officials, fallen trees caused extensive damage to power infrastructure under the MESCOM Uppinangady subdivision. As many as 27 electricity poles collapsed in Bajathuru, Koila, Bollavu, Periyadka, Kuntini and Neddilu areas, resulting in power disruptions across several localities.

MESCOM personnel have launched restoration works to reinstate electricity supply at the earliest. Authorities are assessing the extent of the damage, while residents have been urged to remain cautious amid the prevailing weather conditions.
