Vasco, Jun 7: The Mormugao Police have registered a case of alleged cheating and criminal misappropriation involving gold ornaments valued at approximately Rs 22 lac following a complaint filed by a resident of Cansaulim.

According to police, the complainant, Prajyot Naik, had pledged gold ornaments weighing 171.51 grams as security for a loan obtained from a jewellery establishment in the Sada area. After reportedly clearing the loan dues, Naik claimed that the entire quantity of pledged gold was not returned to him.

The complaint alleges that the accused, identified as Bhimappa Yallappa Chalwadi, a resident of Headland Sada in Vasco, handed back only 43 grams of gold ornaments. The remaining 128.51 grams, estimated to be worth around Rs 22 lac, were allegedly withheld.

Naik accused the suspect of dishonestly retaining and misappropriating the entrusted ornaments, thereby causing significant financial loss. Based on the allegations, Mormugao Police have registered an offence under Sections 314, 316(5), and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which deal with offences related to criminal breach of trust, cheating, and misappropriation.

Police officials stated that the matter is under active investigation and that all relevant records and evidence connected to the gold pledge transaction are being examined.

The investigation is being conducted by PSI Suraj Naik of Mormugao Police Station under the supervision of PI Sheriff Jacques and the overall guidance of Mormugao Deputy Superintendent of Police Gurudas Kadam.

Authorities said further legal action will depend on the findings of the ongoing inquiry and verification of the claims made by the complainant.
