Srinagar, Jun 9: Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district have uncovered a cache of illegal weapons and ammunition in a joint operation, marking a significant development in ongoing efforts to curb unlawful arms activity in the region.

According to a police statement, the operation was carried out by Baramulla Police in coordination with the 52 Rashtriya Rifles during a mobile vehicle checking point (MVCP) established at Chandsuma in Kanispora, near the FCI godown.

During routine checking on Sunday, a white car travelling from Srinagar towards Baramulla was intercepted for inspection. The vehicle, bearing registration number JK02DN-6527, had two occupants on board.

A thorough search led to the recovery of a foreign-made pistol, identified as a CANIK TP9SF METE (9×19 mm), manufactured in Turkey. The weapon was allegedly found in the possession of the co-passenger, who failed to produce any valid licence or authorisation for carrying the firearm.

The individual was identified as Wakeel Ahmed Theekri, a resident of Kamalkot in Uri, son of Noor-ud-Din Theekri. Preliminary questioning indicated that the driver of the vehicle was merely offering a lift and was not aware of the presence of the weapon.

Following the seizure, a case under relevant provisions of the Arms Act was registered at Police Station Baramulla, and investigations were initiated to trace the origin of the weapon and determine its intended use.

In a follow-up operation conducted on Monday, police carried out a search at Kalsi Hardu in Kamalkot based on disclosures made during interrogation of the arrested accused. The search was conducted in the presence of an Executive Magistrate, local village representatives and officials.

During the operation, security forces recovered additional arms, including a Chinese-made pistol, two magazines and 13 live rounds of ammunition. All items were seized as evidence.

Officials said the recovery suggests the possibility of a wider illegal arms network operating in the area. Investigators are now working to identify other individuals who may be connected to the procurement, storage or movement of the weapons.

Police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining public order and preventing unlawful activities, stating that strict action will continue against those involved in activities that threaten security in the region.

The investigation is ongoing.
