Mumbai, Jun 14: In a major relief for patients across Maharashtra, the state's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has directed hospitals, doctors and affiliated pharmacies not to compel patients to purchase medicines exclusively from in-house or hospital-linked pharmacies.
The directive comes in response to complaints that several hospitals were forcing patients to buy medicines from pharmacies operating within their premises, often limiting consumer choice and increasing treatment costs.
Under the new order, patients will be free to purchase prescribed medicines from any licensed pharmacy of their choice. The FDA said the move is aimed at protecting patients' rights, promoting transparency and ensuring fair practices in the healthcare sector.

Officials noted that the decision will help patients access medicines at competitive prices and prevent undue pressure from hospitals or affiliated medical stores. The directive is expected to benefit thousands of patients seeking treatment in both private and charitable healthcare institutions across the state.
The FDA has warned hospitals and pharmacies to comply with the order and uphold patient choice in the purchase of medicines. The move is being seen as a significant step towards strengthening consumer rights and accountability in Maharashtra's healthcare system
