BJP steps up preparations for 2027 polls in UP, Uttarakhand and Punjab

New Delhi, Jun 16: The Bharatiya Janata Party is learnt to have intensified its preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab, with the party leadership reviewing organisational strength, local issues and grassroots readiness in the three key states.

According to party sources, the BJP has begun extensive consultations with state leaders and workers as part of an early strategy to strengthen its electoral prospects.

In Uttarakhand, 17 Assembly constituencies have been placed under direct monitoring, while focused organisational and outreach programmes are underway. Similar efforts are reportedly being carried out in 70 to 75 constituencies in Uttar Pradesh and across 117 Assembly segments in Punjab.

As part of its preparations, the BJP is working to reinforce its organisational structure from the district level to the state leadership. The party is also strengthening its booth-level network through the ‘Panna Pramukh’ model and mobilising local workers to engage with voters on constituency-specific issues.

The BJP traditionally begins election preparations well in advance, and apart from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab, groundwork is also said to have commenced in other states scheduled to go to the polls in 2027.

Party strategists are reportedly drawing lessons from the BJP's recent organisational campaign in West Bengal, where a systematic grassroots approach helped strengthen the party's presence. A similar strategy is now being considered for Punjab, currently governed by the Aam Aadmi Party.

A senior BJP source said feedback from workers is being collected to assess local issues, identify weak areas and understand public sentiment towards the party.

The source added that evaluations of sitting MLAs are also being conducted through multiple channels. These assessments are expected to play a key role in determining candidate selection ahead of the elections.

According to party insiders, the BJP may not shy away from replacing incumbent legislators if ground-level feedback indicates dissatisfaction among voters, particularly in politically significant states such as Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.

In Uttar Pradesh, the party is reportedly paying special attention to 70-75 Assembly seats that it narrowly lost in recent elections. These constituencies have been identified as crucial targets in the BJP's pre-poll strategy.

Party leaders view Uttar Pradesh as central to the BJP's long-term political plans, given that the state sends 80 members to the Lok Sabha. Maintaining political dominance in the state is considered vital ahead of the 2029 General Election.

However, the BJP is also facing challenges from opposition parties, particularly the Samajwadi Party and the Indian National Congress, which have been actively targeting the ruling party on various issues.

In Uttarakhand, the BJP is focusing on preventing voter fragmentation and retaining its support base to secure another term in office.

In Punjab, party leaders are expected to challenge the AAP government on issues related to law and order, development, welfare delivery and anti-incumbency sentiment.

Sources said the BJP is also likely to highlight concerns over drug abuse, cross-border smuggling of narcotics and weapons, and the growing use of drones by smuggling networks operating from across the international border.

To strengthen its appeal among farmers, the party is reportedly considering a range of welfare measures and policy initiatives aimed at addressing agricultural concerns and countering AAP's outreach to the farming community.

With nearly a year of organisational groundwork already underway, the BJP appears determined to build an early advantage in the run-up to the crucial 2027 Assembly elections.
