Goa has preserved identity while embracing development, says Governor on Goa Revolution Day

Panaji, Jun 18: Goa Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Thursday said that the State has successfully preserved its unique cultural identity while embracing modern development since Liberation, while also stressing the need to protect the environment and maintain ecological balance for future generations.

Addressing the Goa Kranti Din function held at Azad Maidan in Panaji, the Governor paid tribute to freedom fighters who took part in Goa’s liberation movement and noted that the State has made significant progress over the years.

He said the greatest tribute to the freedom fighters would be building a society that reflects their dreams and aspirations. The Governor also underlined the importance of environmental conservation, stating that sustainable development is crucial for the long-term well-being of Goa.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who also attended the programme, distributed government job appointment letters to 22 children of freedom fighters on the occasion of Goa Revolution Day.

He said that the remaining 40 eligible beneficiaries would be provided appointments next year on the same occasion.

CM Sawant also announced that the names and contributions of 33 freedom fighters who were martyred during the fight against Portuguese rule at Patradevi would be honoured at a memorial dedicated to them.

President of the Goa, Daman and Diu Freedom Fighters Association, Rohidas Dessai, recalled the sacrifices made during Goa’s liberation struggle and appreciated the government’s initiative to extend employment support to the families of freedom fighters. He was also honoured with a certificate of appreciation and a cheque of Rs 10 lakh during the event.

The function was attended by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, North Goa MP Shripad Naik, Chief Secretary Dr V. Candavelou, Power Minister Sudin Dhavalikar and other dignitaries.
