New York, Jun 19: Several gunshots were fired in New York City's Times Square on Thursday afternoon, triggering panic among tourists and bystanders in one of the world's busiest public locations.

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the incident occurred around 3.40 pm local time near Broadway between West 44th and 45th Streets, shortly after celebrations related to the New York Knicks' NBA championship victory had drawn large crowds to Manhattan.

Authorities said nearly 10,000 police officers had been deployed across the city to provide security during the championship parade, which marked the Knicks' first NBA title in 53 years.

Police said the violence began when a dispute broke out involving a large group of people in the area. During the altercation, a 26-year-old man was reportedly slashed in the neck. Shortly afterwards, a 17-year-old boy allegedly opened fire on the same group.

Videos circulating on social media appeared to show gunfire erupting at a crowded intersection near a parked NYPD vehicle. Tourists, residents and visitors were seen running for safety as shots rang out, while others ducked for cover amid the chaos.

The New York Fire Department said one person sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital. Officials said the victim is expected to recover.

Police officers quickly pursued the suspects following the shooting. The NYPD confirmed that one juvenile suspect had been taken into custody and that a firearm was recovered from the scene.

The latest incident comes just days after another shooting scare in Times Square during celebrations following the Knicks' championship triumph. On June 16, gunshots were reported near the intersection of 42nd Street and Broadway, causing hundreds of people to flee in panic. A 17-year-old boy was injured in that incident, and police later recovered a loaded firearm.

Thursday's shooting once again sent crowds scrambling for safety in the iconic entertainment district as law enforcement officers moved swiftly to secure the area and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
