Mangalore: St Aloysius College Celebrates Annual Day with a Grand Event

Mangalore, Mar 17: It was a joyous occasion on Friday March 16 evening, as St Aloysius College (autonomous) celebrated its 132nd annual day with a grand event that saw a number of students getting honoured, and many more showcasing their talents before a packed audience.

Vice-chancellor of Yenepoya University Dr P Chandramohan was the chief guest, while St Aloysius Institutions rector Fr Joseph Rodrigues presided.

In his address, Dr Chandramohan spoke on the purpose of education and said that in the history of man there had been three civilizations - river valley which was agrarian, industrial and finally educational. "Transformation can take place only due to educational civilization," he said, and quoted Swami Vivekananda to emphasize his point that education was most important in shaping an individual.

He also lauded St Aloysius College for upholding the values of education throughout its 132 years. "Autonomy is the right step forward in enabling students to bloom and realizing their individual potential," he said and added that autonomy should be used with a sense of responsibility ensuring that it is up to date with the changing trends in education.

Fr Joseph Rodrigues in his presidential address spoke of the contribution of St Aloysius College in various fields like politics, academics, literature, law etc. He cited the examples of its distinguished alumnus such as Justice Santosh Hegde, writer Aravind Adiga and many others who had achieved great heights because of their values, honesty and humility. He urged the students to imbibe such qualities in them in order to achieve success.

Principal of the College Fr Swebert D'Silva read out the annual report, which was complimented by a powerpoint presentation on the activities of the college and its student achievers.

Convenor of the event and vice-principal Dr A Lourdusamy welcomed the gathering, registrar (evaluations) A M Narahari introduced the guests, while student council president Aleric Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks.

Veronica Judith Pinto, Fr Francis D'Almeida, Ronald Pinto, Fr Walter Andrade, and Fr Denzil Lobo were present.

A prize distribution ceremony followed, during which a number of students were awarded for their achievements in extra-curricular activities and academics.

A cultural event was held before and after the stage programme, much to the delight of the crowd. A number of traditional and western dances, songs and skits were presented that not only brought out the talent of the students, but also won rousing applause from the audience.
