Mamata reconstitutes Trinamool’s disciplinary panel amid wave of resignations

Kolkata, Jun 20: Amid a series of resignations by senior leaders from organisational positions within the party, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Saturday announced the reconstitution of the party's internal disciplinary committee.

The newly formed five-member panel includes Derek O'Brien, Dola Sen, state legislators Sovandeb Chattopadhyay and Asima Patra, along with former Rajya Sabha member Subhasish Chakraborty.

Notably, former ministers Firhad Hakim and Aroop Biswas, who were part of the earlier disciplinary panel, have been left out of the reconstituted body.

While Hakim continues to serve as a legislator, Biswas was defeated in the recent elections.

The move comes at a time when several influential Trinamool leaders have stepped down from various party positions, raising questions among political observers about internal stability and the long-term composition of the newly constituted committee.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the party's national working committee held at Banerjee's residence in the Kalighat area of South Kolkata on Saturday afternoon.

During the meeting, the party also decided to induct Rajya Sabha MP Nadimul Haque into its national working committee.

Trinamool Congress had earlier established three separate disciplinary committees in November 2024 — one for parliamentary affairs, another for the West Bengal Assembly and a third for overall party affairs.

However, several members of those panels have since aligned themselves with a rebel faction amid growing internal divisions.

In response to the changing political dynamics, Banerjee has now replaced the earlier structure with a single five-member disciplinary committee tasked with overseeing organisational discipline within the party.
