Mumbai, Jun 21: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday participated in the 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations in Mumbai, highlighting this year’s theme “Yoga For Healthy Ageing” and stressing the importance of yoga in maintaining physical and mental well-being.

Speaking to reporters, Fadnavis praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking yoga to the global stage and encouraging people across the world to adopt the practice to manage stress and lead healthier lives.

“I wish everyone a very happy International Day of Yoga. Yoga Vidya is a part of our ancient way of life. I thank our Prime Minister that due to him, Yoga Day is being celebrated in every country of the world,” Fadnavis said.

He added that in today’s stressful lifestyle, yoga can help people remain fit and healthy while dealing with various challenges.

The theme “Yoga For Healthy Ageing” reflects the growing global focus on active and healthy living throughout all stages of life. With increasing concerns over lifestyle-related diseases and non-communicable illnesses, the emphasis has shifted from merely increasing lifespan to improving health span, quality of life and overall wellness.

The 12th edition of International Day of Yoga was observed across India and several countries around the world on Sunday with programmes focused on the benefits of yoga for physical, mental and emotional health.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the national celebrations at Red Road in Kolkata, joining participants in a mass yoga session promoting wellness and healthy living.

In Rajasthan, Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari also participated in yoga celebrations at Albert Hall, along with BJP MLA Gopal Sharma and hundreds of yoga enthusiasts.

Yoga, rooted in India’s ancient traditions, has evolved from a spiritual and philosophical discipline into a worldwide movement promoting physical fitness, mental balance and emotional well-being.

The United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014 following a proposal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 69th session of the UN General Assembly. The proposal received support from 175 member countries, and the first International Day of Yoga was observed on June 21, 2015.
