Washington, Jun 21: Delaware governor Matthew Meyer has officially proclaimed June 21, 2026, as International Day of Yoga, recognising the ancient Indian practice and its contribution to promoting physical, mental and emotional well-being.

In a proclamation issued by the Office of the Governor, Meyer described yoga as a 5,000-year-old tradition that originated in India and emphasised its role in harmonising the mind, body and spirit to enhance overall health.

The proclamation highlighted yoga's wide-ranging benefits, noting that regular practice helps improve physical strength, flexibility, mental clarity and emotional balance, while also providing effective tools for stress management and overall community wellness.

Governor Meyer also acknowledged that the United Nations designated June 21 as the International Day of Yoga to raise global awareness about the numerous benefits associated with the practice.

The proclamation further recognised the efforts of Delaware's Indian-American community in promoting and celebrating the annual observance.

According to the statement, the Indian American Community Delaware, in collaboration with the Consulate General of India in New York, is organising events across the state to encourage wellness, peace and social harmony.

Governor Meyer formally encouraged Delaware residents to explore and adopt yoga as part of a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.

International Day of Yoga is celebrated every year across the globe and was established by the United Nations in 2014 after India proposed the resolution, which received broad international support.

Over the years, the observance has grown into one of the most prominent global celebrations of India's cultural heritage and its contribution to health and wellness.

Across the United States, Indian diplomatic missions and Indian-American organisations regularly organise yoga sessions in parks, community centres and public spaces, drawing participation from people of diverse backgrounds and age groups.
