Ammonia gas leak in Tamil Nadu seafood unit: Death toll rises to 9, all victims women

Chennai, Jun 23: The death toll in the ammonia gas leak at a private seafood processing and export facility in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu has risen to nine, the state government said on Tuesday.

According to the health department, all nine deceased were women, including seven from Odisha and two from Assam. Eight victims were identified as Shibani, Jumani Juang, Geetha Juanga, Purinama Juanga, Champabati Juanga, Parbavathi Juanga, Sita Hasda and Anjita Soren, while the identity of one victim is yet to be confirmed.

The toxic gas leak occurred during routine industrial operations on June 21 at the facility located in the Kannigaipair-Manjungaranai area near Periyapalayam.

A total of 69 people affected by the leak are currently undergoing treatment at various hospitals. Of them, 27 are admitted at Vels Hospital, 18 at Venkateswara Hospital, 11 at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and 13 at Stanley Medical College Hospital. Two patients have already been discharged.

The victims were admitted with severe symptoms caused by ammonia inhalation, including breathing difficulties, coughing, chest discomfort and irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract.

The exact cause of the accident is under investigation. The health department said the condition of those undergoing treatment is being closely monitored and necessary medical support is being provided.

Authorities have also undertaken monitoring and assessment of the affected area to ensure public safety. District officials and healthcare institutions are coordinating efforts for timely treatment, surveillance and emergency response, the department added.
