Mumbai, Jun 24: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis met Amazon CEO Andy Jassy in Mumbai on Wednesday and highlighted the growing partnership between the state and the global technology giant, describing Amazon as a key contributor to Maharashtra's digital transformation journey.

Sharing details of the meeting on social media platform X, Fadnavis said Maharashtra has strengthened its relationship with Amazon over the past decade, beginning with the company's decision to establish its first cloud infrastructure region in India in Mumbai in June 2016.

“It was a great pleasure to meet and welcome Amazon CEO Andy Jassy in Mumbai today. We discussed how Maharashtra has emerged as India’s technology capital and how Amazon has become an integral partner in the state’s digital transformation journey,” the Chief Minister said.

Fadnavis also referred to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Amazon Web Services (AWS) during the 2025 World Economic Forum in Davos, under which the company announced an $8.3 billion investment expansion in Maharashtra.

He said the investment represents Amazon’s largest commitment to any single Indian state and is expected to create 83,100 jobs across the country.

The Chief Minister noted that Amazon has established a strong physical presence in Maharashtra, operating six fulfilment centres and more than 200 delivery stations that support deliveries across India and international markets.

He added that over 22,000 entrepreneurs and small businesses from Maharashtra are exporting products globally through Amazon, with Mumbai, Thane, Pune and Kolhapur featuring among India's top 50 exporting cities on the platform.

Fadnavis also praised the company’s environmental and social initiatives in the state.

According to him, Amazon has committed ?10 crore towards conservation efforts in the Vaitarna hydrobasin, a project expected to replenish 1.3 billion litres of water annually and benefit around 700 farmers.

He further highlighted Amazon’s efforts to plant 300,000 trees in the Western Ghats and its $1.2 million investment aimed at restoring flamingo habitats around Thane Creek.

The company has also undertaken programmes focused on skill development to prepare lakhs of young people in Maharashtra for future employment opportunities, he said.

“Looking forward to collaborating further for even greater achievements,” Fadnavis added.

Andy Jassy’s visit comes at a time when Amazon is facing intense competition in India's rapidly expanding quick-commerce sector.

The company is battling domestic rivals such as Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart and Flipkart, all of which are aggressively expanding their network of dark stores to capture a larger share of the online grocery market.

On Wednesday, Amazon announced plans to expand Amazon Now, its ultra-fast delivery service, to more than 300 cities across India, as it seeks to build what it describes as the country’s largest “delivery in minutes” network.
