Mangaluru, Jun 25: An anti-drug awareness programme was conducted at Lourdes Central School in the LCS Summit Hall on June 24 under the guidance of the principal, Fr Johnson L Sequeira. The programme aimed to educate students about the harmful effects of substance abuse and to promote a healthy and responsible lifestyle.
The session began with a prayer song, followed by the compering by Aarav Arvind and Ria Virika Khambadkone of grade 9. The welcome address was delivered by Sonia Crasta, followed by the felicitation of the resource person. The programme was attended by students of grades 9 to 12.












The session was led by Dr Surendra Prabhu, professor and head of the department of forensic pathology at Yenepoya Dental College, Mangalore. He delivered an informative talk on substance abuse and its impact on health and society.
Dr Prabhu emphasized the importance of oral health and explained how substances like tobacco, alcohol, and drugs harm the human body. He stated that many addictions begin at a young age, especially between 12 to 17 years. He warned that tobacco use can lead to serious diseases such as oral cancer. He explained that harmful chemicals in tobacco damage the mouth first and then spread to the entire body. He also highlighted that alcohol affects the liver initially and may result in multiple organ failure. He spoke about the harmful effects of drugs on the brain, affecting thinking and behavior.
He explained that addiction begins with curiosity and gradually leads to dependency. He pointed out the social and economic problems caused by substance abuse. He stressed that addiction can ruin a person’s future and relationships. He highlighted the importance of observing International Day against drug abuse on June 26th. He encouraged students to stay away from harmful habits and adopt a healthy lifestyle. He concluded by reminding students that prevention is better than cure.
He motivated students to set goals, resist peer pressure, and engage in healthy activities like sports, yoga, and exercise. He also encouraged spending time with family and seeking counseling when needed. He inspired students with the message, 'Be Smart, Don’t Start', and led them in a pledge to stay away from all forms of substance abuse and spread awareness.
The session was interactive, with students actively participating in discussions and clarifying their doubts. Dr. Prabhu answered their questions and provided valuable guidance.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Saanvi T R and Prajwal of grade 10, appreciating the efforts of the speaker, the management, and all participants. The awareness programme was highly successful in educating students and inspiring them to lead a drug-free and healthy life.
