Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 25: Congress MP Rajmohan Unnithan on Thursday opposed the implementation of the Centre's PM SHRI (PM Schools for Rising India) scheme in Kerala, alleging that it is closely linked to the National Education Policy (NEP), which he claimed could adversely impact the state's education system and future generations.
Speaking to reporters, Unnithan said several decisions taken by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) under the NEP framework were not in Kerala's interest and should not be adopted in the state.
"The PM SHRI scheme is part of the NEP. Certain decisions under the policy are detrimental to Kerala and the coming generation. Such measures should not be implemented in the state," he said.

The Congress leader further alleged that the previous LDF government had entered into an agreement with the Centre regarding the PM SHRI scheme without adequate discussion within the CPI(M), the Left Democratic Front (LDF) or the state Cabinet.
According to him, objections raised by the CPI had later led to the agreement being kept in abeyance.
Unnithan said the present UDF government has constituted a high-powered committee to examine the matter in detail.
"The committee met on Wednesday and will continue deliberations. The Kerala government will take a decision on signing the PM SHRI agreement only after the committee submits its recommendations," he said.
Commenting on the controversy surrounding the state budget proposal to reduce taxes on low-alcohol beverages, Unnithan alleged that the move was a continuation of a policy initiated by the previous LDF government, which had planned to manufacture and market such beverages but could not proceed due to Assembly elections.
He maintained that any decision relating to liquor policy should be taken by the Congress after consultations with its UDF allies.
"The budget announcement was made without adequate discussions, leading to criticism. The Chief Minister has understood the concerns raised," he said.
Unnithan added that the issue would be discussed within the Congress and the UDF, and the proposal could be withdrawn if the alliance decides against it.
On the issue of drug abuse, the Congress MP stressed the need for stronger measures to combat narcotics trafficking and protect the younger generation. He urged the Kerala government to continue its efforts against the smuggling and distribution of narcotic substances entering the country through various sea and land routes.
