Udupi: 107-year-old Meets 98-year-old Friend After 30 Years at Polling Booth!

Udupi: 107-year-old Meets 98-year-old Friend After 30 Years at Polling Booth!

Udupi, Mar 18: The much-awaited polling for the Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituiency got off to a slow start on Sunday March 18.

The rate at which voters flocked to the polling booths was almost an anti-climax to the high drama and action-packed weeks of campaigning that preceeded the voting day.

Amidst all this, there were two voters, who would remember this particular voting day for a reason that's nowhere political.

Meena Shetty from Inna village Karkala block, all of 107 years, took the trouble to cast her vote, assisted by her family.

At the same time in another corner, 98-year-old Celestine D'Souza too arrived, with as much difficulty and determination, at the same polling booth.

But what amused the onlookers was that both Meena and Celestine turned out to be old friends, meeting each other after 30 years!

That's what you call a memorable reunion - meeting at a polling booth while participating in the country's democratic process in the dawn of life.

Here's hoping that the politicians take a cue from this and understand what it means to the voters when they elect their leaders. Whoever wins, hope he keeps up his promises at least for the sake of voters like Meena and Celestine.

Peters point refers to a specific set of politicians in state who visit mutts and temples ignoring the fact that people actually own the mandate and Not God...so dont get offended, nobody brought churches or mosque comparison... communal minds...!

There should be maximum age limit for voting right. Do these ladies aged 107 & 98 know which candidate or political party is good?? It looks like they had brought to vote by force.

May god bless 107 years old Meena Shetty and 98 years old Celetine D'Souza who came to cast their precious votes badly needed by the candidates. It was a surprise for both the young at heart ladies to meet after 30 years and that too at a pooling booth. Whoever wins the election should be grateful to the young at heart ladies and honor them.

yeah Peter you have problems when the politicians visit temples but no qualms when the same set of politicians go to church and ask the preist to convince the parish to vote for the candidate whihc suits you. what has temple or church had to do here. if want to advise to take the blessings of Granny that is fine but, when you bring in Temples I am offended.. temples are more democratic persay than any of the monotheist worship center.

With due respect to both the Ajjis, Both the Ajjis seem to be still under the impression that India is governed by dedicated and honest politicians comparable to Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri. If both the Ajji's come to know that the candidate who they just voted is a Tihar Jail Alumni, i doubt they will ever dream of Voting again.

My son cast his maiden vote 1st time. My name is still missing n not included in list despite my application 2 months before. Most of the minority voters names are missing from voters list. At this age, they may not have any needs and may not expect anything from political candidates. They voted just with the hope that the elected person would do good for the generations next to them. This very act of their voting purely shows their concern about others. Yes. The political leaders should take a clue from them.

    Dear Readers / Jimmy Noronha,
Please do not be under the wrong impression that these guys who are helipng her to walk, lift her and transport her in a luxury vehicle are any of their relatives, they are all party workers of a political party who do anything for one day coz they are paid to do this. The two persons in the third picture with an old house in the back ground 'could' be her relatives. I know coz i have been and seen all these. If you want a proof of this, next time on an election day in M'lore just be present early morning at Chesire home, St. Antony's Ashram and St. Jospeh's Asylum and you will come to know the truth.
