Morena, Jun 27: A horrific family tragedy unfolded in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district, where a man allegedly murdered his wife and two minor sons with an axe before taking his own life by jumping in front of a moving train, police said on Saturday.

The incident occurred late on Friday night in Kishanpur village under the jurisdiction of Basaiya police station. The accused, identified as 35-year-old Balram Singh Kushwaha, is suspected to have carried out the killings following ongoing domestic disputes, although investigators have not ruled out other possible motives.

According to police, Balram allegedly attacked his 32-year-old wife, Ravita Kushwaha, while she was asleep in the courtyard of their home. He is then believed to have fatally assaulted their two sons, Aarav (8) and Debu (5), using the same axe. All three victims sustained severe head injuries and died at the scene.

Officials said the crime went unnoticed throughout the night because the house was enclosed by high boundary walls. The murders came to light on Saturday morning when neighbours noticed that the main gate had been locked from the outside. Sensing something unusual, they looked inside the premises and discovered the bodies before alerting the police.

After the alleged murders, Balram reportedly made his way to the nearby Shikarpur railway crossing, where he jumped in front of a passing train. Railway personnel later recovered his body from the tracks and informed the local police.

Basaiya Police Station in-charge Vivek Tomar said officers rushed to the scene after receiving information and secured the house for investigation.

"The bodies were recovered from inside the residence. The crime scene has been preserved, evidence collected and further investigation is underway," Tomar said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Vijay Bhadoria said a forensic science team examined the spot and gathered crucial evidence.

"We are piecing together the sequence of events and recording statements of family members, neighbours and other witnesses. The exact reason behind the incident will be established only after the investigation is completed," he said.

During the preliminary inquiry, police learnt that Balram was employed as a marble polisher in Bengaluru and had returned to his native village around a month ago. Investigators are also looking into reports suggesting he had been disturbed after allegedly receiving a WhatsApp video showing his wife dancing during a Bhagwat Katha programme.

Police further revealed that the couple had reportedly been facing marital problems and had been living separately for some time. Ravita had returned from her parental home just three days before the incident, following repeated efforts at reconciliation.

Investigators, however, cautioned against drawing conclusions at this stage, stating that all possible angles, including domestic conflict, financial stress and other personal issues, are being thoroughly examined. The post-mortem reports and forensic findings are expected to provide further clarity into the circumstances surrounding the case.
