Karkala: Christ King PU College marks Press Day, honours journalists

Karkala, Jul 10: Christ King Pre-University College, Karkala, observed Press Day with a meaningful programme highlighting the role of journalism in society.

Prasad Shetty, head of the department of journalism at Alva's Degree and Postgraduate College, Moodbidri, inaugurated the program by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Addressing the gathering, he said journalism offers immense career opportunities and scope for excellence, urging students to make the most of them and contribute positively to society. He noted that newspapers remain one of the most credible sources of information and stressed that reading newspapers regularly helps students prepare for competitive examinations. "A village without newspapers is like a house without windows," he remarked, encouraging students to cultivate the habit of reading newspapers every day.

Presiding over the function, Dr Peter Fernandes, member of the Christ King Education Trust, said journalists are the voice of the voiceless and deserve immense respect. He observed that newspapers and news media play a significant role in curbing crime and exposing social issues, thereby contributing to the creation of a just and progressive society.

Mohammed Shareef, president of the Karkala Taluk Working Journalists' Association, expressed concern over the declining number of young people entering the journalism profession. He encouraged students to pursue careers in news media, describing journalism as a field that offers invaluable life experiences.

Vasanth Kumar, State general secretary of the Karnataka Media Journalists' Association, said journalists must remain vigilant while carrying out their responsibilities. He stressed that integrity and honesty are essential while pointing out the mistakes of others and added that field reporting helps journalists gain practical knowledge and rich life experiences.

On the occasion, Ramachandra Bareppadi, managing editor of a news web portal, was felicitated by the Christ King Education Trust for his contribution to journalism. Accepting the honour, he shared his experiences and journey in the profession.

Journalists, reporters and photographers from various media organizations who were present were also honoured with mementoes.

Principal Lakshmi Narayan Kamath delivered the introductory address. Commerce lecturer Deepak welcomed the gathering, while Kannada lecturer Umesh Bellippadi compered the program and proposed the vote of thanks.

Vice principal Dr Prakash Bhat, High School headmistress Josna Snehalatha, P=primary school headmaster I Christopher Kotian and others were present on the dais.
