Cape Town, Jul 11: South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25, only weeks after he represented the national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of his death and have appealed for restraint while investigations continue.

Adams featured in all three of South Africa's group-stage matches at the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, helping Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stage. He was an unused substitute in the team's 1-0 defeat to co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32.

South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, expressed deep sorrow over the midfielder's passing, describing him as one of the country's brightest football talents.

"It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams. South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him develop into a full Bafana Bafana international," McKenzie said.

The minister added that the cause of Adams' death has not yet been established and urged the public and media to avoid speculation until the investigation is completed and official information is released.

The South African Football Players Union also paid tribute, saying Adams had proudly represented his country on football's biggest stage and that his death was an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs and the nation.

Adams made his senior international debut for South Africa in 2022 and established himself as a key midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns after beginning his professional career with Stellenbosch FC. His final appearance for South Africa came during the 2026 World Cup, where he played in each of the team's three group-stage matches before their campaign ended in the first knockout round.
