Mangalore, Mar 21: Karnataka Theological Research Institute (KATHRI) and Central institute of Indian languages (CIIL) jointly organized a seminar on 'Kannada as a Classical Language in 19th century and contributions by foreign philosophers', held at Sahodaya, here on Tuesday March 20.
 
The first day of the convention hosted by KATHRI, witnessed a number of intellectual discussions on the language concerning foreign philosophers.

Dr Venkatachala Shastri, senior Kannada scholar from Mysore, inaugurated the seminar and stressed on the importance of Kannada literature. He said that foreign scholars came to India to learn Kannada literature from scholars and thus the knowledge was translated to western languages but the contribution by local people to gain knowledge was left behind as they were not mentioned anywhere.

Scholars like Kittal and B L Rice noted the contribution by Indian scholars.  Shastri also stressed on the importance of education for women.
 
Dr S S Burman, director of CIIL, Dr R Subbakrishna, principal of CIIL, Dr Purushotham Bhilimale, director of American Institute of Indian studies, Gurgaon and Dr B A Vivek Rai from Ruthsburg Institute Germany among others were present.
 
The valedictory programme will be held on Wednesday March 21 at 4 pm with Dr Chinnapa Gowda as the chief guest.
