Kolkata, Jul 21: A father and his son were allegedly hacked to death, while the mother sustained critical injuries, in a brutal attack at New Town on the northern outskirts of Kolkata on Tuesday. Police suspect the incident stemmed from a long-running land dispute.

The deceased have been identified as Muzaffar Mistry alias Mona (55) and his 26-year-old son, Bapi Mistry. Muzaffar's wife, who was also attacked, is undergoing treatment in critical condition at a hospital.

According to the police, the Mistry family had been embroiled in a prolonged dispute over a plot of land in Patharghata, New Town. Investigators said tensions had escalated after the opposing group allegedly began construction on the disputed property, which the family had objected to.

Preliminary findings indicate that a group of assailants attacked the family with sharp weapons earlier in the day. The victims were allegedly assaulted repeatedly, leaving them with severe injuries.

All three were rushed to the Bidhannagar Sub-District Hospital, where doctors declared Muzaffar Mistry and his son dead. The woman remains under intensive medical care.

Following the incident, officers from the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate, including senior officials, reached the crime scene and launched an investigation.

Police have detained several individuals for questioning in connection with the attack. Security has also been tightened in the area to prevent any further escalation, as tension continues to prevail.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination, while a criminal case has been registered against the suspected attackers.

A senior police officer said preliminary investigations suggest the double murder was linked to the ongoing land dispute, adding that further inquiries are underway to identify all those involved and establish the sequence of events.
