Gurugram, Jul 24: Activist Sonam Wangchuk on Thursday night ended his 26-day hunger strike at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram after discussions with the Centre, calling on supporters to remain peaceful and avoid any form of violence.

Wangchuk broke his fast in the presence of Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, along with senior leaders of the Apex Body of Leh Ladakh. Sharing the development on X, he said he had concluded his fast after nearly four weeks of protest.

Explaining his decision, Wangchuk said 65 Members of Parliament from different political parties had either visited him or signed letters urging him to end the fast. He added that the decision followed prolonged negotiations on several conditions and concerns over possible violence in the country.

"I will explain the conditions in detail in a separate video very soon. Meanwhile, I urge you all to stay very vigilant about not allowing violence of any kind anywhere," Wangchuk said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Wangchuk's decision, wished him a speedy recovery and urged him to follow doctors' advice and regain his health. The Prime Minister also reiterated that the government had already initiated stringent action in the alleged paper leak cases and that the issue would be discussed further at the Cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke thanked Wangchuk for his "extraordinary courage and sacrifice" but asserted that the agitation would continue. He said the party would maintain its peaceful protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar until Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy.

Despite Wangchuk ending his fast, the CJP has retained its call for nationwide peaceful demonstrations on Friday, saying the movement for accountability and examination reforms will continue.
